Stage 2 — Licence

NMCN licensing & indexing

What indexing is, how the professional exam and registration work, and how to renew or verify your licence.

The NMCN (Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria) licenses every nurse and midwife in Nigeria. Your path through it is: get indexed as a student at the start of training → pass the professional qualifying examinationregister and receive your licence → renew the licence periodically (with continuing education). All forms, fees and verification run through the NMCN portal.

What is indexing?

Indexing is the NMCN registering you as a bona-fide student nurse/midwife at the start of your programme. It links your training to an accredited school and confirms you are eligible to eventually sit the professional qualifying examination. Schools usually coordinate indexing for their students; you'll provide credentials and pay the Council's indexing charge.

The professional qualifying examination

At the end of training you sit the NMCN's professional/qualifying examination. Passing it is what makes you eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse (or Midwife). The exam covers the theory and clinical competencies in your programme.

Exam format, dates and pass requirements are set by the NMCN and change between cycles — check the official NMCN portal for the current timetable and rules.

Registration & your licence

After passing, you register with the NMCN to obtain your licence to practise. Registration establishes your professional record with the Council. You may also need to complete any required internship/bonding depending on your route and institution.

Licence renewal & continuing education

An NMCN licence is not permanent — it must be renewed periodically, typically tied to continuing professional development. Keep your licence current; lapses can complicate employment and any future application to work abroad. Renewals are processed through the NMCN portal.

Certificate & licence verification

Employers abroad and foreign regulators (UK NMC, US boards via CGFNS) will ask the NMCN to verify your qualification and registration directly. This verification is a standard, required step when emigrating — start it early, as it can take time. See working abroad.

Frequently asked questions

What does NMCN stand for?
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria — the statutory body that regulates nursing and midwifery education, registration and practice in Nigeria.
What is the difference between indexing and registration?
Indexing happens at the start of training (you're registered as a student and made eligible to sit the exam). Registration happens after you pass the professional exam (you become a licensed nurse).
How often do I renew my nursing licence in Nigeria?
Licences are renewed on a recurring cycle tied to continuing professional development. Check the current renewal period and requirements on the NMCN portal, as these are set by the Council.
How do I verify my NMCN certificate to work abroad?
Foreign regulators request verification of your qualification and registration directly from the NMCN (often via CGFNS for the USA). Begin the verification process early because it can take several weeks or more.
